Hopak formed following the wave of Ukrainian migrants that settled in South Australia after World War 2. Their long journey by ship prompted spontaneous dance, song and musical accompaniment that led to the formation of a formal Ukrainian language and dance school in Adelaide in 1951. The first classes were taught by Pan Mykola Sas and Pani Eugenia Andruchowich in the classrooms alongside St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Wakefield Street with concerts held at the Adelaide Town Hall.
Today, we proudly continue the tradition established by our family members and friends at the Ukrainian Community Hall in Hindmarsh. Built with Ukrainian dancing in mind, the hardwood sprung floor and stage is ideal for dance and performance and is the home where our dance and language schools proudly showcase Ukrainian culture for all.

” I joined Hopak when I was five years old and was a Ukrainian dancer for eighteen years. A helper, then teacher for the next twenty, I took a leave of absence, but my heart never did. It is my pleasure to guide your children towards discovering the beauty, excitement and joy that is Ukrainian Dance.’
